Workshops are for Students and Advisors!
Current Issue – Aspects of this year’s special study topic “Water Resources Management: Local Control and Local Solutions” will be incorporated into all of our workshops.
Saturday, October 26th – Teacher Orientation, Forestry and Soils Workshop.
8:00 AM to 1:30 PM at Tolland County Agricultural Center (TAC) in Vernon
Work with soil scientists to learn more about the importance of soils in the natural (and unnatural) world. You’ll be getting your hands dirty!! Brush up on basic soils skills, learn about earthworms, examine a soil pit, participate in a mock Envirothon soil station exam, and hone your map reading skills. Soils are a non-renewable natural resource, so you will learn how to describe soils and practical methods to preserve them.
Work outdoors with forest professionals to learn about and practice:
- Tree Measurement – Use a clinometer, a DBH tape, and a Biltmore (tree scale) stick for measuring tree diameter and merchantable height and estimating board-foot volume.
- Tree ID – Identify common tree and shrub species in Connecticut
- Tree Physiology – Identify “what makes a tree a tree”; see how tree growth characteristics adapt to soil types & water availability; and understand the needs of a tree.
Orientation – During the field activities, an Envirothon program orientation will be available to interested teachers.
Saturday, January 18th, 2020 – Aquatics Workshop
8:00 AM to 1:30 PM at Connecticut River Academy in East Hartford
Come take a dip into aquatic science! What lives in water? How do people affect their water resources? What types of jobs are available relating to water? Learn about all of this and more! Work with water resource professionals and aquatic ecologists who will provide hands-on activities including species identification of fish, insects, crustaceans using keys, and explore watershed systems and wetland environments. This year a special focus will be placed on source water protection and water resource management. In other words, come learn how we can protect our water resources for future generations.
